Dogtooth

I'm not going to tell you anything about Dogtooth, well I'm going to tell you a few things. It's Greek, that means subtitles. It's freaking weird, a weird I had never experiencd, and I watched this a few months after I saw Rubber for the first time. Enjoy

The Blob (1988 remake)

I love the remake of 1958's The Blob starring future superstar Steve McQueen. The original was cool and creepy, when I was 6 years old. I just remember thinking never pick up a homeless person who is running around with a "thing" on his arm. The sequel has almost super star Kevin Dillion at the height of his career. It also has some very intense monster attacks that take no prisoners . Everyone gets killed in this flick; some actors who make appearance include IO legend Del Close, Jack Nance, Candy Clark, Donovan Leitch & Bill Mosely. Then of course we have the main star horror & teen comedy stalwart Shawnee Smith I am still in love with to this day :) This is a flick worth checking out if you have not already. A fun fact, the special effects team used McDonald's apple pie filling for the blob in some scenes. I heard when they tried to remove the filling it pulled up 8 inches of concrete. Interesting!

Reversal of Fortune

I heard the news today that Jeremy Irons has been cast as Alfred in the upcoming Superman & Batman. This reminded me of the roll Mr. Irons won the Oscar for in 1990. This movie is based on a book that noted lawyer Alan Dershowitz wrote about the attempted murder trial of Sunny Von Bulow(Glenn Close). Irons plays Clause Von Bulow creepy husband who seems the perfect suspect. Ron Silver plays Dershowitz who takes the case because he believes that Clause didn't get a fair trial the first time around. Close's character is in a coma for most of the film but still narrates the story with a dramatic flare while referencing her own tragic situation. The script was written by Nicholas Kazan and is a classic. If you haven't seen this flick check it out!!

Touching the Void

It doesn't get any better than Touching the Void. Void is a docudrama revolving around two British climbers and their trip up and down a mountain in Peru. The climb to the the top of the mountain is treacherous but the descent is where the problems start. The story is told from the talking head perspective of the two climbers while actors reenact what happened to them. This is one of the most intense films I have ever watched and promise you won't be let down.

Porky's

Almost 20 years before American Pie; the students at Angel Beach High were just as horny and did just as many stupid things. Porky's is the name of a Florida strip club/brothel run by very obese character actor Chuck Mitchell(Better Off Dead). The gang gets screwed over by Porky and spend the rest of the film trying to figure out a way to get Porky back. Along the way they have misadventures with Kim Cattrall(Sex &the City), Art Hindle & Doug McGrath. This movie is hilarious and 100 times better than all the American Pie movies combined. My favorite scene involves one of the characters being caught by a gym teacher after spying on some female students showering. Amazing!!! That's all I can say!

It Happened One Night

Clark Gable & Claudette Colbert star in this 1934 screwball comedy directed by Frank Capra. This film was the first to win the big 5 at the Academy Awards(best picture, actor, actress, director & screenplay). That feat has only been accomplished twice since, in 75's One Flew over the Cukoos Nest & 91's Silence of the Lambs. This film is a giant cliche now and the stars at the time thought the script was awful. Some how though one of the greatest film comedies of all time was created. Often imitated but never duplicated this is a film that changed the way I looked at cinema and the role the past can pay in the present, enjoy!!

His Girl Friday

This 1940 film is based on a play "The Front Page" about an editor and his ace reporter. Well when Howard Hawks decided to adapt the play he decided that the ace reporter should be played by a woman. This decision has led to one of the funniest movies ever filmed. With rapid fire overlapping dialogue this film was a game changer.  I watch this film at least once a year and I always discover something new. Check it out and prepare to laugh.

Carey Grant will be all over this list so don't think you have seen the last of him.
