Porky's

Almost 20 years before American Pie; the students at Angel Beach High were just as horny and did just as many stupid things. Porky's is the name of a Florida strip club/brothel run by very obese character actor Chuck Mitchell(Better Off Dead). The gang gets screwed over by Porky and spend the rest of the film trying to figure out a way to get Porky back. Along the way they have misadventures with Kim Cattrall(Sex &the City), Art Hindle & Doug McGrath. This movie is hilarious and 100 times better than all the American Pie movies combined. My favorite scene involves one of the characters being caught by a gym teacher after spying on some female students showering. Amazing!!! That's all I can say!

It Happened One Night

Clark Gable & Claudette Colbert star in this 1934 screwball comedy directed by Frank Capra. This film was the first to win the big 5 at the Academy Awards(best picture, actor, actress, director & screenplay). That feat has only been accomplished twice since, in 75's One Flew over the Cukoos Nest & 91's Silence of the Lambs. This film is a giant cliche now and the stars at the time thought the script was awful. Some how though one of the greatest film comedies of all time was created. Often imitated but never duplicated this is a film that changed the way I looked at cinema and the role the past can pay in the present, enjoy!!

His Girl Friday

This 1940 film is based on a play "The Front Page" about an editor and his ace reporter. Well when Howard Hawks decided to adapt the play he decided that the ace reporter should be played by a woman. This decision has led to one of the funniest movies ever filmed. With rapid fire overlapping dialogue this film was a game changer.  I watch this film at least once a year and I always discover something new. Check it out and prepare to laugh.

Carey Grant will be all over this list so don't think you have seen the last of him.

13 Assassins

I first became aware of 13 Assassins because of director Takashi Miike involvement, it seems that any time he releases a movie the web fan boys go crazy. I finally got to see it at the 2010 AFI Film Fest. I watched with three of my good buds and a packed audience. This movie did not let me down, it's the samurai movie that I always hoped would be made. The plot involves the real life assassination of a mad feudal lord in the 1840's. The first half of the movie is the team of assassins being formed and preparing ala Oceans 13. The last half of the movie is pure samurai action with the 13 going on a suicide mission against an army of 200. It's 300 with samurai swords and much better acting. For a Takashi Miike film it's rather subdued, I would say there is only one scene that really throws on the gnar factor. Throw this one with your boys.

Stalag 17 Christmas Movies Part 1

One of my favorite things about this time of the year is Christmas movies. This 1953 comedy from Billy Wilder(Some Like It Hot) stars one of my old time faves, William Holden(check out this dudes movies he's legit). This movie is about the humorous life inside a prison of war camp during WW2. It's like a theatre version of The Great Escape, with absolutely no motorcycle jumping. This is an amazing film, no fooling. The reason I'm putting this in as a holiday movie is for one scene near the end. It's not just any scene, it's one of the greatest reveals ever put on film. The best part is it's during a musical number; the men of the barracks on Christmas are singing "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" as the spy reveals himself to the audience. It's a total surprise and what true film making is all about. Please watch this movie. Tune in tomorrow I'll have another holiday fave, or maybe some weird sci fi movie.
